Round One of the premiership has begun for 2011. Going to the script the premiers won their first “hit out” of the year in some style with their first up win.
Though with everything going on about the lives it was a little window into the things that people appear to enjoy – good basic gladiatorial battle. Being able to stand on the sidelines, shout abuse at the “opposing” team/players, feel a sense of achievement when “their” team has won. It taps into all of those basic animal emotional responses.
Here was a week in which his wife and partner of over 40 years had a massive heart attack and triple by-pass surgery within three days of the attack. This is a person who would not readily fall into a candidate for a heart attack. A walker who rarely drinks and never to excess. Had the possible cigarette or two when they were in their younger years – but then a lot of people have done that too. The heart attack was completed and then the earthquake and tsunami that has now devastated parts of northern Japan. This is the country where I had spent the better part of 10 years living, working, traveling and existing. Catastrophic events have more meaning when you are able to somehow have a kind of attachment to the location. It happened with 9/11, the Tsunami in SE Asia, Black Saturday Bushfires. All of these have a more emotional attachment as they are places that I have visited and invested some time in exploring.
